"Fine Art Oil Painting"
Born in Bunbury, West Australia, Ian Anderson moved to New Zealand in the early 1970's. Initially working as a graphic artist illustrator, he shifted to the Fine Art sector in the 1980s, and went on to become a professional painter with several joint and solo exhibitions. Anderson has also tutored in creative illustration, portraiture, painting, photography, cartooning and leather work, and is very conversant with creative technologies.
Nature is Anderson’s primary source of inspiration. Drawing from the rich complexities of colour, shapes, and imagery of flora and fauna, he paints in a photo-realist style; often juxstapositioning images to trigger symbolic connections and reveal a deeper personal message. His smooth, almost hyper-realist style, is frequently enhanced with the addition of design details and text on the same canvas. “If I can capture some of this wonder and inspire at least one of you to the greater picture - the marvel of creation and the stories within - to paint, to photograph, to illustrate, to carve out in leather or write a poem about - then I have done my job. Because every day, for me, is full of wonder.”~ Ian Anderson.
The delightful anthropomorphic behavioural traits of animals and birds, is another device successfully used to depict contemplative scenarios with deeper content. By incorporating a surreal element to his painting approach, Anderson has developed a visual form of narrative philosophy. He expresses aspects of ancient wisdoms, proverbs, and personal poetry, which speak to the human condition. “From the small wildlife marsupial in the desert to the wonder of mans exploration of a distant planet; the birth of a dolphin to the skeleton of a dinosaur in the dust; Hubble's images of new stars to the nerve endings in the Iris of an eye, a bird in flight winging on the wind - all reflect the extraordinary hand of a divine creator to whom I can only bow in humility and adoration of.”~ Ian Anderson
